In 1993, we opened our first Uglystore in Altadena, California. However, we were forced to close after the 1994 Northridge earthquake destroyed our building. After several months, we moved to our current location in East Los Angeles. The two-story brick building was built in the late 1890’s and was a former brothel run by the infamous Hester Greenstreet. In 1909, after the new mayor, George A Alexander, raided the red light district of downtown Los Angeles, Hester and her girls moved here and operated a “first class” brothel for many years.  The brothel closed in 1924 after three of the girls and Hester were brutally murdered.  The murder was never solved and the girls continue to haunt the floor upstairs, though they occasionally make an appearance at the bar in the coffeehouse late at night.

We purchased the building in September of 1999 (with the help of Baby Huey’s lottery winnings – he’s always been lucky) and began remodeling and enlarging into the coffeehouse/bookstore and ugly extravaganza that we are today!

Our coffeehouse serves only  Italian-style espresso and cappuccino in porcelain cups (none of that Starbucks faux-coffee here!).  We also make the ONLY gelato artigianale in Los Angeles There is nothing “to-go” – so don’t even ask.  Besides you won’t want to.  Real coffee makes real community – so come on in and commune.

We carry a wide range of hard-to-find art and music books, leftie literature, and one of a kind ugly items (also available online).  Feel free to curl up with a good book, surrounded by uglies and enjoy a real cappuccino or affogato (espresso over gelato) at the Uglystore.  We welcome the offbeat and the ugly.

A NOTE ABOUT ONE oF OUR FOUNDERS

Carol

Carol “Bunfish”  BendtCarol grew up on the Mississippi bijoux and worked for her family’s crawfish business until she was 18.  After getting her high school equivalency, she moved to Hollywood.  In 1991 she landed an advisory role on “Forrest Gump,” and began working occasionally as a location scout  specializing in the deep South.  She also plays the bagpipes in the Scottish marching band, Off-Kilter, and occasionally appears at the UglyStore on Sunday nights, playing jazz bagpipe.

Bunfish handles our buying and selling, traveling the country and surfing the net to find the ugly and fabulous gift items you see in our store.
